Project Scope

Located in West Yorkshire, Spen Valley Fire Station is part of the main headquarters of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Recognised as one of the top-ranking fire stations in the country, it plays a vital role in serving a population of over two million people across nearly 800 square miles.

To maintain this high level of service to the area, the station identified a need for bespoke storage for fire personnels’ equipment and uniforms.

The BOYCO Way

Background

Drawing on our 60+ years of expertise in emergency service FF&E, Team BOYCO collaborated with Aspect Building Solutions to create a tailored storage solution designed specifically for the needs of Spen Valley Fire Station.

Providing end-to-end project management, our in-house design team developed bespoke muster bay and cloakroom furniture solutions that were delivered and fitted on site by our expert teams.

Bespoke Products

It was essential that the fixed furniture BOYCO designed and manufactured supported the station’s daily operational requirements. Key to this, was providing a well-organised space that allows firefighters to access equipment quickly during emergency callouts.

Bespoke Muster Bay

Robust and able to withstand rigorous emergency service environments, bespoke muster bay solutions were selected for this project.

To the backs and sides of the muster bays, mesh panels were installed to enhance usability. These panels help to keep items clearly separated, preventing tangling and allow easy identification of equipment. This is crucial in a fire station, where quick decisions must be made during service, ensuring firefighters can access what they need without delay.

Manufactured at our Stockport factory, the metal frame of the muster bays are pre-galvanised. Providing complete water resistance, they’re essential for ensuring that firefighters can store sodden clothing after emergency callouts without causing damage to the units.

As per the BOYCO standard, the units are also coated with our ‘hot dip’ Nylon.  Four times thicker than powder coated alternatives, this ensures exceptional durability against scratches and scrapes, making it perfect for the demanding environment of the fire station.

This coating also offers anti-microbial properties, preventing 99% of all known bacteria from surviving on its service, supporting the strict health and safety practices of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Cloakroom Furniture

Designed for multi-functional storage, BOYCO’s shelf over wall units with peg rails and backrests, as well as island units were installed in the fire stations changing room. This cloakroom furniture provides dedicated hanging space, along with our unbreakable pegs, and overhead shelves to keep helmets, bags, or personal belongings stored off the floor. Another key benefit to this furniture is keeping clutter up and away from walkways, reducing the risk of trips or falls in this high-traffic emergency environment.

Both cloakroom configurations feature integrated benching for added comfort and practicality, allowing firefighters to sit while changing in and out of uniforms.

The seating is made from American White Ash timer and is finished with a double coating of our anti-microbial lacquer, supporting hygiene and giving the structure long-lasting strength.

Project Success

Throughout the project, Team BOYCO worked closely with both the contractor and customer to ensure that the products supplied were perfect for the environment. A smooth delivery and installation process completed this fantastic project.

We are proud to have provided robust and efficient storage solutions for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, supporting their emergency service staff in their daily duties.
