Project Scope

Situated in Gorton Education Village in Manchester, Cedar Mount Academy is part of the Bright Futures Educational Trust whose focus is to provide the best possible opportunities for the children, young people, families, and communities’. To fulfil this mission, the Academy recognised the need to refurbish the Food Technology classroom at the school.

The BOYCO Way

Background

Only a short distance from our Stockport factory, Team BOYCO supplied our tried and trusted worktops, cupboards, and resource areas to Cedar Mount Academy. Teaming up with B&E Boys LTD, whom we have previously worked with on projects across the Northwest, we are proud to have offered our award-winning fixed furniture solutions to support the transformation of the Food Technology classroom.

Bespoke Solutions

Catering to students studying food science and nutrition, our in-house design team worked closely with B&E Boys LTD to ensure that all needs of the customer were met for the refurbishment. Utilising our over 60 years of expertise in providing ‘Built to Last’ fixed furniture solutions in education projects, Team BOYCO designed, supplied, and delivered the following to the school:

Worktops

Recognising that the learning space is a high-traffic area, our design team selected a 40mm ‘postformed’ worktop for the counter space. Ideal for food preparation, this worktop is thicker than traditional options, providing both outstanding durability and longevity. Combined with its laminate surface, it effectively protects against scratches and scrapes, even in a busy cooking environment.

Along with its robustness, the 'postformed’ worktop is simple to maintain. Stain-resistant, any spills from foods or liquids can quickly be cleaned with simple cleaning tools, supporting the health and safety practices of the school.

The worktop was chosen in the finish ‘walnut’. Warm and bright, it creates a welcoming and comfortable aesthetic for the students and teaching staff. This is fantastic for the school environment, as it supports focus on learning new skills and creativity through cooking in a clean, inviting space.

Cupboards

Due to food technology lessons requiring tools and equipment such as frying pans, chopping boards and spatulas, storage solutions were necessary to include in the classroom design. To accommodate, both 1200mm base drawer line cupboards and drawers were supplied, along with a standard 1000mm cupboard base with doors. This under-the-counter space provides additional storage for items such as cooking pots, preventing the build-up of clutter and supporting the organisation of the classroom.

The doors and bases of the cupboards are in the colour dark grey. Contemporary and modern, this colour contrasts well with the natural ‘walnut’ finished worktop, creating a visually appealing environment for all at the school.

Resource Area Solutions

Along with space for storage, resource areas were supplied and delivered to the classroom project. Essential in any cooking space, they provide students and teachers quick access to clean water and washing-up facilities. Both a deck mixer tap and six mono mixer taps were supplied, each having their own benefits:

  • The deck mixer tap allows quick access to hot or cold water, useful for students who need to fill up pots of water for recipes.
  • The mono mixer tap is an accessible solution for any classroom. Perfect for handwashing, the single lever can be manoeuvred with little to no effort to the required temperature, giving access to students with a range of needs or abilities.

Project Success

Throughout the design and supply, Team BOYCO worked closely with both the contractor and customer to ensure a smooth and timely delivery process for the project.
