This was a major project to design, manufacture and install 24 teaching walls for a school in Tower Hamlets. It required close collaboration with the client, architect and contractor.
The BOYCO team has many years of experience designing and manufacturing fixed furniture and fittings for educational establishments. Our products have been developed to meet the varied needs of teachers, support staff and pupils. However, every project has unique characteristics, which can only be identified by ‘getting under the skin’ of the brief.
So, when Tower Hamlets Council embarked on a £10m project to extend and refurbish Olga Primary School, we liaised directly with school staff to understand their needs. We designed, visualised and created digital ‘mock-ups’ of bespoke teaching walls for 24 classrooms – and spent time working with the school to refine the designs... right down to the colour scheme. We also designed, manufactured and supplied 18 sink and workspace units.
The new primary school replaces a single-storey 1982 structure with a vertical design to maximise space in a tight urban location. A light-filled atrium divides separate buildings for teaching and administration, with facilities tailored for use by the wider community outside school hours.
It was a complex project and therefore, important for BOYCO to liaise with the main contractor from day one to ensure our teaching walls would align with the M&E and data infrastructure. We also managed our installation project carefully to coordinate with other trades on a busy site.
When complete, the teaching walls provided ingenious storage, screen and presentation combinations on one wall - perfect for the smaller classrooms. We have since been commissioned by the school to undertake other smaller projects to help enhance the teaching experience.
The quality of the teaching walls is excellent – very robust - and the teachers are very impressed with the design, the functionality and the storage. It’s a thumbs up from us. We’d definitely use the Boyco range again.
